This past Friday and Saturday I was at a conference for Early Childhood Educators and, as commonly happen at these types of gatherings, playdough and Play-Doh came up, among many other serious and not-so-serious topics that affect children. As always, recipes for edible, all natural, Kool-Aid, and a variety of other types of playdough were discussed and exchanged, as well as new ideas on ways to use the modeling compound.
On my last trip to Walt Disney World I happened to stay in the Play-Doh building of the 1960s section. Poetic, huh? Just to let you all know I’m not just a geek when it comes to Disney, I found this placement odd considering that Play-Doh was invented in 1956. A mystery afoot, I did a little digging and found that the US Patent was issued for Play-Doh on January 26, 1965. So there we have it, a child’s toy torn between two decades situated based off of its patent year. So much drama in a little tub!
The one piece of the Pop Century Play-Doh sculpture that I really love is on the back near the ground. Talk about authenticity!

I call Play-Doh the smell of childhood. I have a few cans of it in my office downtown and my home office and every now and then I open one just for the aroma. It takes me back.
Ditto d.o.c. It truly was an Icon of my childhood.
Check your email Ryan. I thought you might like to see a picture of the original factory in Cincinnati.
Love Me some Play-Doh!!
I'm starting a blog carnival on Monday's called I wish I was with Mickey Mondays.
It's a chance for us to show pictures and tell stories that don't normally show up in scrapboks. :)
You can read about it here:http://tipsfromthedisneydiva.blogspot.com/2008/05/wish-i-was-with-mickey-mondays.html
I think it will be a lot of fun. Hope you'll consider participating.
Thanks Richard, that is a beautiful picture! I may be partial to black and white vintage photographs, but that one really hits home.
And you all are right, the smell is all its own, and defintely carries me back to my childhood.
Very cool! I really need to get some Play-Doh for those slow days at work...
Agreeing with the other comments, the smell of Play-doh reminds me of my childhood, specifically my pre-school days. Just the smell of the tub and the Doh on my hands...magic!
